Project Description:
Among the top K-12 school purchasers of green power in the nation, the Austin (TX) Independent School District (AISD) promotes the use of renewable energy and aims to reduce direct and indirect greenhouse gas emissions. Solar at schools also serves as an important instructional tool to teach students while reducing fossil fuel consumption and carbon pollution annually.
AISD issued two competitive RFPs in 2016 and 2017; construction occurred during ongoing school and community activities and associated construction restrictions under a tight schedule. HOLT Renewables built the projects in two phases of four schools each. The first phase in 2016 totaled 592kW. A larger, second phase project included four more schools, saving thousands in annual utility costs. Under a 25 year master plan, as other buildings are modernized or constructed, the school district will optimize each building’s capacity for a solar array wherever structurally and financially feasible.
